Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a safe and minimally invasive cosmetic procedure to improve the tone and texture of your skin. It’s a viable treatment option for a range of skin conditions including wrinkles and scarring. We’re happy to offer it to our patients at Bay Dermatology in Tampa. Continue reading to learn more about this popular treatment method.

How Does Microdermabrasion Work?

Microdermabrasion is an exfoliating treatment. It works by sanding away damaged skin cells on the surface of the skin so that new, healthy skin cells can replace them. It leaves the skin looking brighter, smoother, and refreshed.

It also works to restore skin’s healthy, youthful appearance by increasing collagen production. Our skin produces less collagen as we age, which can lead to skin that’s less uniform in tone and texture.

There are two main techniques for microdermabrasion. The first uses an applicator with an abrasive tip which is used to exfoliate the outer surface of the skin. The other method uses a spray consisting of aluminum oxide or sodium bicarbonate. A vacuum or suction is used in conjunction with the spray for the same exfoliating effect.

What Can Microdermabrasion Treat?

It can be used to treat a variety of common skin concerns, including:

  • signs of aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots
  • scarring
  • sun damage
  • acne, acne scars, and blackheads
  • stretch marks and enlarged pores
  • uneven skin tone
  • rough skin or uneven texture
  • melisma

What Can I Expect?

Microdermabrasion will be performed in your doctor’s office. This procedure doesn’t require anesthesia or numbing of the area, and it takes approximately an hour to perform.

After the exfoliating process has been completed with the spray or the applicator, a moisturizer and sunscreen will be applied to protect your skin.

One major benefit of microdermabrasion is that you can return to regular activities immediately after treatment. You’ll be advised to use only gentle products on your skin, as it will be extra-sensitive after the treatment. Wearing sunscreen and limiting sun exposure is also crucial after the treatment to avoid sun damage.

It’s common to see improvement right after treatment. You may need multiple sessions to fully address your skin concerns.
