Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping, is one of the cosmetic procedures performed by Dr. Jason Swerdloff. As our Board-Certified facial plastic surgeon at Bay Dermatology in Tampa, he has extensive experience in this form of cosmetic surgery. Continue reading to learn more about this procedure and how it may fulfill your cosmetic goals.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, which may be called a “nose job” by patients and other individuals, is a type of cosmetic procedure that focuses on reshaping the nose. Rhinoplasty may be used for both cosmetic and functional reasons, either to bring better proportion to the face or to facilitate breathing by repairing structural issues.

Rhinoplasty may alter skin, bone, and/or cartilage in the nose. If you’re determined to be a good fit for rhinoplasty, your doctor will work with you to determine the best approach for your unique situation.

What Are The Benefits?

Rhinoplasty may provide benefits for individuals with concerns relating to the nose, including:

  • Altering nose size to achieve balance among facial features
  • Altering the size or position of the nostrils
  • Adjusting the width at the bridge of the nose
  • Minimizing the appearance of bumps or depressions on the bridge of the nose
  • Altering the size or placement of the tip of the nose (if it is bulging, upturned, hooked, sagging, etc.)
  • Correcting asymmetry of the nose

What Can I Expect From the Procedure?

Before rhinoplasty is scheduled, you’ll meet with your doctor to determine if the procedure is right for you. This will involve a medical exam, a discussion of your cosmetic goals, the risks, and photographs of your nose.

Prior to the procedure, you’ll be advised to stop taking certain medications and to stop smoking. This helps to ensure a healthy healing process after the procedure.

General anesthesia or local anesthesia in combination with a sedative is typically administered before a rhinoplasty. This secures your comfort during the procedure. During the procedure, the surgeon will make adjustments inside of your nose. If cartilage must be added to the nose, it will likely be taken from another area of the nose or from another area of your body, such as the rib.

After the procedure, you’ll need to rest with your nose elevated. A splint will be secured to your nose for protection and typically is removed after a week. Your doctor will advise you on how to recover after surgery, but it will likely be recommended to avoid strenuous activities and anything that may put pressure or strain on the nose. This includes pulling clothing over your head or vigorously brushing your teeth.
