| Nail
disorders comprise about 10% of all skin conditions. Due
to their exposed location, nails take a lot of abuse. Ingrown toenails
are a common nail problem that can be caused by improper nail trimming,
tight shoes or poor stance. This can cause a corner of the nail
to curve downward into the skin causing pain and can sometimes lead
to infection.
Fungal infections are
also a very common nail disorder and sometimes difficult to treat
and are more common in toenails than in fingernails.
Debris sometimes builds up under the nail plate and discolors the
nail bed. The top of the nail or the skin at the base of the nail
can also be affected. Symptoms that could signal nail problems include
color or shape changes, swelling of the skin around the nails and
pain. Additionally, the persistence of white lines, dents or ridges
in the nail should be reported to your dermatologist.
